TOPICS FROM CROOKS AND LIARS

Sometimes I'm just rendered speechless, and this is one of those times. Natasha Chart via Sustainable Food at Change.org:

Obama's considering appointing a former Monsanto vice president, Mike Taylor, to head the Food Safety Working Group at the FDA.

As Jill Richardson writes at LaVidaLocavore at the link above, Taylor thinks the FDA wastes too much time on food safety inspections at meat packing plants. Further, he believes that one of their main problems is that they have to slow down their line speed too much.

Everyone who's read anything about the horrendous working conditions at US meatpacking plants knows that incomplete kills before slaughter and worker injuries increase dramatically when line speeds increase.

As also noted at the Ethicurean, Taylor is the reason milk from rBGH/rBST cows doesn't have to be labeled. Bovine growth hormone is perfectly safe, after all. Except for cows, or humans who drink its breakdown products in milk.

So yes, Mike Taylor is the person we have to thank for putting pus from mastitis-infected cows into the milk supply, and exposing milk-drinking Americans by the millions to greater cancer risks.

This guy is heading up a food safety working group.

I'm just swimming in the changeiness.

Kids, if you care about your food, you know what to do:

Kaviraj,

Thanks for these updates.

Do you remember what happened to the head of China's FDA when they discovered he was taking bribes?  That kind of government action works better than consumer petitions and phone calls.

It's all quite disgusting, reminiscent of the last days of the Roman Empire.

You know this is all made possible because of an ill/ mis-informed populace. And this is the result of the communications act which was passed by the FCC a few years ago. It allowed all the media to be controlled by a handful of people. So instead of getting "news", Americans get propaganda 24/7.

ALAN,

Not only in the US. Propaganda is everywhere. Murdoch owns most UK and EU papers too and some tv stations. Then there is Conrad Black, who owns media in Europe and Berlusconi of course and Kerry Packer in Australia.

And although i am no fan of China's measures, they do work. Sometimes i think we should have death penalty for damaging the planet's ecology. But that is wishful thinking and impractical anyway. Who would implement it other than the Chinese?

It is simply sink or swim and meanwhile, do our best to make the people aware. Thus i write like mad and am now in the process of writing a book on Eco-homoeopathy. Brazil gave me that inspiration and i have collected quite some material already. Some of the stuff is posted here in the forums, in the thread of the Ash trees and Mark O'Sullivan's questions. Have a look, if you like.

That's wonderful Kaviraj. It's revolutionary knowledge! Along with the technical stuff, let them know what's possible. It's dreams that change reality.

Here a comment from someone who is a so-called advocate of consumer responsibility.

Wendy Gordon

Wendy Gordon is a leading advocate for responsible consumer choices

Finally Food Safety is the Main Course

Did you know that farms and food processors are inspected on average once every 10 years? No wonder there are so many instances of food contamination in the U.S., leaving thousands dead and hundreds of thousands hospitalized each year. Despite the toll, the federal government has shown no willingness to butt heads with the powerful food lobby and provide adequate protection for consumers and proper controls for industry, until now.

As profits and consumer confidence have plummeted with each new outbreak, the political climate has changed. So much so that in early June the House Energy and Commerce Committee reached unusual bipartisan consensus on the most sweeping reform of the food safety-system in at least 50 years.

At the center of the legislation is an effort to transform a slow and reactive government apparatus into a preventive food-safety system. The bill gives the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) broad new powers to regulate produce at the farm level and review corporate records on activities ranging from food-processing to pathogen-testing. Rather than once every 10 years, inspections would take place as often as once every six months for certain items. Foreign governments whose companies send high-risk products to the U.S., like seafood from China, would be required to certify that those exports comply with U.S. health standards.

The legislation is in sync with the plans announced earlier this week of a White House panel, led by Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, to shift the focus of food regulation toward preventing outbreaks rather than reacting to them "after they've left the barn" as they say. The Food and Drug Administration used the announcement to introduce a rule aimed at reducing salmonella infections from raw or undercooked eggs by 60%, or 79,000 illnesses a year. The regulation, among other things, requires egg producers to test their facilities for salmonella and buy chicks only from farmers who monitor for the pathogen.

The White House panel also called upon the agencies to make several other changes. The U.S. Department of Agriculture, for example, is developing standards to reduce salmonella contamination in turkey and chicken by the end of the year and will step up testing of beef to reduce E. coli contamination this month. At the same time, the Food and Drug Administration is developing voluntary guidelines to reduce E. coli in melons, tomatoes and leafy greens.

The political climate has indeed changed. Having lost billions of dollars to recent outbreaks, the food industry is now welcoming the White House panel's recommendations as the best way to turn around consumer confidence. Tougher food safety rules, will certainly help, but our system remains deeply flawed and consumers should remain vigilant. Here's some good advice: Learn where animals came from and what they were fed, avoiding those that have been packed in disease-promoting factory farms and feedlots or contaminated with mercury or PCBs from polluted waterways. Be wise this summer as you plan your next picnic or cookout with these smart shopping tips and safe food handling advice from NRDC's Simple Steps.

Foodprocessors do not last that long.
I have to buy a new one every 3 years.
Inspecting them every 10 years on average is no sinecure with about 100 million households in the US.
But inspecting them for self-inflicted foodpoisoning sounds like a good idea, instead of blaming some germ.
In the Swineflu thread you can read how germs have nothing to do with disease causes.

Santo Claus to little children, is how i typify such scaremongering and its apparent need.

Free the Seeds!

Beware the biotech euphemisms for genetically modified seeds (a.k.a. GMOs, or genetically modified organisms). Anytime you hear people like Bill Gates and other unnamed politicians and business leaders talk about "better seeds" or "improved seeds," you are hearing them unwittingly promote an evil plot to destroy the planet. While they think they are furthering the technology of our advanced civilization, they are actually furthering the speed of our demise.

In laboratories across the globe, seeds are being captured, submitted to intense and painful torture (too graphic to describe here), and held prisoner in a scheme for world food domination. These imprisoned seeds, injected with contaminated DNA, are then sent around the world with alleged goodwill under the guise of "feeding the world." These seeds are programmed to corrupt pure, innocent plants via their pollen, spreading their DNA like a sexually transmitted disease, so companies that made those seeds can assert ownership over all seeds...under the claim of "intellectual property."

Farmers, politicians, and technophiles have all fallen under the spell, and believe that humans must improve on nature in order to survive -- and in the process have unleashed an insidious health horror. These DNA-doctored seeds (approved by the U.S. government under the "Generally Regarded As Safe" or GRAS loophole, which requires no scientific or health testing) are now inside virtually every human on earth. A day does not go by in which we don't eat a genetically modified product (and sorry, but vegetarians eat them the most).

Doctors around the globe are calling for a ban on GMOs because what few studies have been done show the seeds are connected to alarming health problems...including ACCELERATED AGING! I am not making this up. The products of these seeds, once inside our bodies, in effect eat at us from the inside, causing intestinal distress, organ damage, allergic reactions, and many other horrible problems that we are only just discovering. And yet the seed companies involved have done everything in their power to prevent, suppress, and destroy any information regarding the effects of their little army of death.

There is only one way to protect yourself and your family from these horrible invaders. Eat organic. Buy organic and grow organic. Organic foods are the only safe haven for seeds that are still free of contamination. But it's only a matter of time before all seeds are contaminated...unless we free them!

Free the seeds! Demand organic.

The American Academy Of Environmental Medicine Calls For
Immediate Moratorium On Genetically Modified Foods

Wichita, KS - The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) today released its position paper on Genetically Modified foods stating that "GM foods pose a serious health risk" and calling for a moratorium on GM foods. Citing several animal studies, the AAEM concludes "there is more than a casual association between GM foods and adverse health effects" and that "GM foods pose a serious health risk in the areas of toxicology, allergy and immune function, reproductive health, and metabolic, physiologic and genetic health."

The AAEM calls for:

  • A moratorium on GM food, implementation of immediate long term safety testing and labeling of GM food.

  • Physicians to educate their patients, the medical community and the public to avoid GM foods.

  • Physicians to consider the role of GM foods in their patients' disease processes.

  • More independent long term scientific studies to begin gathering data to investigate the role of GM foods on human health.

"Multiple animal studies have shown that GM foods cause damage to various organ systems in the body. With this mounting evidence, it is imperative to have a moratorium on GM foods for the safety of our patients' and the public's health," said Dr. Amy Dean, PR chair and Board Member of AAEM.

"Physicians are probably seeing the effects in their patients, but need to know how to ask the right questions," said Dr. Jennifer Armstrong, President of AAEM. "The most common foods in North America which are consumed that are GMO are corn, soy, canola, and cottonseed oil."

The AAEM's position paper on Genetically Modified foods can be found at http:aaemonline.org/gmopost.html.

AAEM is an international association of physicians and other professionals dedicated to addressing the clinical aspects of environmental health. More information is available at www.aaemonline.org.

Vote With Your Fork!

Wondering what one action you could take that will yield maximum beneficial results to both your own life and the environment? Make the commitment to buy and eat only sustainably grown food.

Your body, family and the planet will all say "thank you." (And don't forget your psyche: healing our relationship with the food we eat each day is great ecotherapy).

If you're not sure why this is a good idea, check out the new movie Food, Inc. Supermarket and fast food fare will never look as appetizing again.

Every purchase of genuinely organic, local and/or sustainably grown food is a contribution to a grower who's doing the right thing -- and a vote against factory farming, Frankenfoods, animal torture and the pesticide companies.

Yes, you might spend a little more in some stores. But if you go to the Farmers Market and local farm stands or grow some of your own veggies (home grown tomatoes taste SOOOO much better!), you could also cut your food budget. As you're weighing the pros and cons of voting with your fork, don't forget that eating healthy may help you save a lot on medical bills and therapy costs. Also, as a taxpayer, you're saving yourself and your kids a bundle in public health and toxic cleanup expenses.

If more of us followed food expert Michael Pollan's advice to eat less but eat real food, a lot of the world's problems would be solved.

See you in the garden or at the Farmer's Market!

There are many, "ripe for the picking", so to speak, who are waiting for the right motivator to come along. As they say in the east, "when the student is ready, the teacher appears."

While the leopard may not change its spots, it can be trained like a domestic cat. It is not someone's nature we seek to change, but his consciousness and his mode of thinking. From the mode of ignorance, it is most difficult to be aroused. The trick is, to find where someone's passion lies and there you have the entrance to change his mentality and help him arouse from his ignorant slumber and steer him from passion towards goodness.

To me, the amount of people fed up about so many things is a sign that needs to work out for the good. Teach people to survive from 1 acre, which can grow a million pounds of food each year. If we at all could get the numbers together, we could bypass the supermarket for food and deal Monsanto a deadly blow. Completely peaceful and within the frame of the law.

My sentiments entirely Kaviraj.  I'm seeking other like minds to create an ecoVillage community, based on Cohousing and incorporating employment within the village, based almost entirely on the production and processing of natural fibre.

Nothing will change unless we change it and we ALL possess unlimited potential to create and have whatever we want.  It has nothing to do with background and upbringing; it has nothing to do with the haves and the have-nots.  If we really want to see change and we put our minds to it, we can achieve anything.Clap

Excellent idea! Cooperation and no competition. Just like in nature.

On your own you cannot become independent. You always have something you cannot do - you may have wool but how to spin it? You may have grains, but how to grind them? You may need shoes, but how to make them?
So you can do everything in a community, inclusive of your fuel - oils can be grown. But you must seek to be independent of mechanic power. Everything must be geared for animal traction.
You will need land for food and for animals, like cows and sheep, horses and bullocks. So your community must attract people with skills in their own field.
Carpenters and builders, blacksmith and baker, miller and metal worker, leather maker and tailor, barber and doctor. Hauler and packer, and woodsman or shepherd, farmers and gardeners, markets and business.
But you can either use gold or you can use barter, whichever fits best. There should be no debt-based economy, but one based on commodities and labour. Honest, straightforward and with strict laws and firm adherence and maintenance of the law, regardless one's position.
