Hello.

In our neighbourhood are in the last two days two dogs poisoned, one is in critical condition at the Vet.The dogs ate baked fish with poison it seems.Because two dogs from us are just eating anything they find, we are very scared, and we decided they stay on the leash for a while. I wonder,in case something will happen, are there any homeopathic remedies to give? One owner told me his dog started vomiting, foaming from the mouth, diarrhea, and severe shaking.his dog did not make it to the Vet,died in the car.

Moetzie.

Hello Moetzie,

Unfortunately dogs aren`t as strong as hedgehogs (Dutch : egels) in that respect, because hedgehogs resist most natural and synthetic poisons and toxins quite well, but they can be affected by slug bait (metaldehyde) poisoning, but are usually unharmed by poisoned slugs (snails) they eat.

Dog/Animal poisoning is one of the most serious medical emergencies that you may ever have to cope with as a dog/animal owner ! A veterinarian is in such a case your most valuable ally when faced with the possible poisoning of an animal companion.

It`s not always easy to prevent it from ever happening, especially not when your pet is outside your home, running, playing in the field or bushes etc.

Always seek veterinary attention a.s.a.p. in these cases !

At home or in a garage it`s possible they drink kerosine, gasoline, (petrol) or antifreeze etc. Antifreeze is the most poisonous substance to all animals ! They like it because it tastes sweet !

Also consider lawn sprays, car oil and garden insecticides.

to be continued

Continuation

Even if you have many homeopathic remedies in a kit at home the main problem for a layman often is that he/she isn`t able to fit the correct remedy to a number of symptoms. Sometimes you can smell the pads of their feet or the animal`s breath to establish the poisonous cause. (Or compare the smell of the puddle with the smell of the animal`s breath). For antifreeze look for pink, red or yellow-green puddles. Sometimes you see burn marks/blisters on mouth and feet which makes you think of batteries/acids. Animals walk through it on the ground and get it in their mouths when they wash off their feet.  Poison may even be absorbed by the pads of their feet !

If the animal is still conscious:

Turn animal`s head to the side and drain out his mouth

Try to identify the poison. Make the animal drink one half glass of water, but don`t do this if you suspect your pet has ingestid acids !

Treat for shock (cover the animal to retain body heat)

Call vet/professional or animal poison control if you live in the USA (Georgia--1-900-680-0000 or 1-800-548-2423)

If unconscious :

Place animal on its side and let mouth drain

Check breathing (feel, look, listen)

Treat for shock (as mentioned above)

Call vet/professional or poison control and follow their instructions !

If an animal is having a convulsion from poisoning :

Stay with the animal. Don`t restrain the animal. Don`t put anything in mouth. Remove collar. Call vet/professional or poison control.

to be continued

continuation

In case of poisoning (if you know the remedy)give doses of 4-5 pellets or 1-2 tablets (or 5-10 drops)at 5 to 10 minute intervals, also en route to your vet.

Two of the main remedies are Arsenicum album 6x (D6)or 3c or Nux vomica 6x (D6) or 3c

Symptoms for Arsenicum album are :

anxiety, restlessness, weakness, great fear with cold sweat, coldness of body parts, constriction of air passages, wheezing respiration, simultaneous vomiting and diarrhoea (dark, bloody, frothy, offensive)

Arsenicum alb. 6x is often used for e.g. rabbits that have eaten snail bait.

Symptoms Nux vomica :

hypersensitivity and irritability, digestive disturbances, convulsions, shallow oppressed breathing, nausea/vomiting with much retching (Dutch : kokhalzen), scanty diarrhoea with much urging, symptoms worse from touch, movement.

Poisoning through eating bad cooked or raw meat, sausage or fish : Arsenicum album 6x or 3c together with Okoubaka 2x or 3x.(or 3c)

By Cammarin preparations (rat poison) which inhibit blood clotting ; Lachesis 6x, 8x or 30x or 3c or 12c. with Vitamin K injections.

Toxic symptoms following vaccinations ; Thuja 12x or 6c or 30x or 30c/30k

Convulsions following vaccinations : Silicea 6c, 12x, 30x or 30c.

General antidote to poison, may also be used following misuse of medications : Nux vomica 6x or 3c.

Misuse of antibiotics/steroids : Sulphur 3c or 6x.

Misuse of cortisones and chemical tranquillising agents ; Phosphorus 12x or 6c.

Overdose of digitalis (foxglove) :Pulsatilla 6x or 3c.

Poisoning from insecticides, sprays containing DDT, paint and lacquer mists or for draining off toxic agents following severe illness ; Okoubaka 2x (if not available 3x).

Remedies which are helpful in building up the body during illness and debility :

Phosphoric acid. 6c, 12x, 30x or 30c/30k, once or twice daily. or China off. 6c up to 30c. For very weak animals : crush a tablet with a spoon on a piece of paper and put half on the food and half in the water. This is an exception, so don`t do this in other situations !  Give for 8-10 days approx. until amel. (improvement)

Wim. (please don`t forget to print this out for later reference ).

So for eating the fishy fish Arsenicum album + Okoubaka would have been the right choice !   W.

Let`s hope you`ll never need this list for your dog, but it`s always good to know a bit more about this subjet, just in case... !   W.

Hello Penel,

In this situation it`s best to go to the vet to induce vomiting in the dog. Unfortunately, there`s no proper allopathic antidote, as far as I know. Theobromine in the chocolate is very dangerous, especially for older dogs because they may have a cardiac arrest by too rapid a heartbeat caused by the theobromine.

Homeopathically you can treat according to symptoms (the remedy needs to fit the picture of the symptoms).

Symptoms may  be : increased nervousness, excitement, trembling (muscle tremors), panting (without rapid heartbeat), diarrhoea, rapid heartbeat, increased urination or incontinence, nausea, vomiting, coma.

Wim.

The dog is already at the vets - sorry, I should have said that.  I'm not sure of the treatment being followed - but I know her heartbeat was very very fast today.

Hello Penel, Let`s hope it`s not an old dog, because then it may be in big trouble. (See website on this at Google .com) W.
